TRUSTED BY HOMES & BUSINESSES ACROSS THE SFV

Overview

24/7 emergency. Combustible-gas detector. SoCalGas coordination.

SAFETY FIRST: If you smell gas right now, leave the property immediately. Do not turn on lights or appliances. From outside, call 911 and SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200. Then call Bert’s.

Gas leaks aren’t a “see how it goes” problem. We use combustible-gas detectors to pinpoint leaks in supply lines, appliance connections, regulators, and meter assemblies, and coordinate directly with SoCalGas on every job.

What Does It Cost?

Detection pricing scales with system size, number of appliances on the line, and operating pressure. A single-family home with five appliances is one number. A multi-unit building or a commercial kitchen with high-pressure runs is another. We give you a flat-rate quote before any detector turns on.

Soap-and-Water vs. Electronic Detection

Soap-and-water vs. electronic detection. Soap test is the old-school method. It works for big leaks at visible fittings. Electronic combustible-gas detection finds small leaks, intermittent leaks, and leaks at fittings buried in walls or under appliances. Real gas detection uses both. If a plumber shows up with only a spray bottle, you’re not getting full detection.

Scope of Work

What's In Every Gas Leak Detection Call

Combustible-Gas Detector Sweep

Electronic detector on every supply line, appliance connection, and regulator. Finds small leaks and intermittent leaks a soap test would miss.

Pressure Decay Testing

Isolate the system and watch the pressure to confirm a leak exists and quantify the rate. Tells us how bad the leak is, not just whether it's there.

Pinpoint Location Report

Exact fitting or section that's failing, documented for you and for any inspector. No vague 'somewhere on the gas line' diagnosis.

SoCalGas Coordination

We work directly with SoCalGas on shutoff, meter lock-out, and re-light. You don't manage two separate appointments or play go-between.

Same-Day Repair Quote

You see the leak location and we hand you the repair quote on the spot. Most jobs go straight from detection into same-day fix.

How It Works

Our Step-By-Step Process

  1. Step 1

    Safety Check On Arrival

Before any tool comes off the truck, tech confirms the property is safe to enter. If SoCalGas has already tagged the meter and locked it out, we work within their shutoff (no live gas on the system). If the meter is still active, tech ventilates the area, confirms no ignition sources are running (no pilot lights, no light switches being flipped), and does an initial walk-through with the combustible-gas detector at low sensitivity to confirm the air is breathable. 5 to 15 minutes. You stay outside or in a clearly safe room while this happens. Do not flip any switches or light any flames until the tech gives the all-clear.

  2. Step 2

    Combustible-Gas Detector Sweep

Tech runs an electronic combustible-gas detector along every gas line, fitting, regulator, shutoff valve, and appliance connection in scope. The detector beeps and registers parts-per-million when it picks up methane. Sweeps the meter assembly, runs along visible piping in the garage and crawlspace, checks every appliance: water heater, furnace, range, dryer, fireplace. 20 to 45 minutes for a typical single-family home, longer for commercial or multi-unit. You can watch from a safe distance. Stay out of the room being swept so detector readings aren't influenced by movement.

  3. Step 3

    Pressure Decay Test

Tech isolates the gas system at the meter, pressurizes the lines with air or inert gas to test pressure (per code), and watches the gauge. Pressure holds steady means the system is tight. Pressure drops over the test window means there's a leak and the rate tells us how big. 15 to 30 minutes for the test itself. You'll see the gauge reading and the time stamps on the work order. Confirms whether a leak exists, quantifies the rate, and rules out lines that are sound.

  4. Step 4

    Findings And Repair Quote

You see exactly where the leak is, marked on the line with tape or chalk. Tech writes up a pinpoint location report (which fitting, which appliance, which section) and hands it to you. Flat-rate repair quote written on the spot. SoCalGas coordination is explained: who calls them, when they re-light, how long the gas stays off. 10 to 20 minutes for the conversation. Most jobs roll straight from detection into same-day repair. You approve, we proceed. You want a second opinion, you keep the report and call us when you're ready.

FAQs

About Gas Leak Detection

  • Sulfur. Rotten eggs. Natural gas itself is odorless. Utilities add mercaptan specifically so you can smell leaks. If you smell it: leave, call 911 and SoCalGas, then call us from outside.

  • If you smell gas right now: 911 and SoCalGas first. They'll shut and lock the meter. Then call us. We handle the diagnosis and repair on the property side of the meter. SoCalGas handles their side and the re-light.

  • Yes. Small leaks accumulate in enclosed spaces. A pilot light, a light switch, or a static spark becomes the ignition source. Small leaks also indicate a fitting or line that's failing and will get worse. Don't 'monitor' a gas leak. Find it and fix it.

  • Yes. Restaurants, multi-unit buildings, retail. Commercial systems often have higher pressures and more code requirements. We handle the permit and inspection side.

  • After we finish the repair and pass any required inspection, SoCalGas typically re-lights same-day or next-day. We coordinate scheduling and meet them at the property. You don't have to wait around for a separate appointment.
