Black Iron vs. CSST
Black iron vs. CSST. Black iron is the traditional material. Cheap and durable, but slow to install and corrosion-prone over decades. CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) is faster to run and flexible (good for retrofits and seismic areas like SFV), and it requires proper bonding to prevent lightning-related failures. New code in many SFV cities favors CSST for new runs. We’ll recommend based on your specific layout and budget.

- Step 1
Confirm Scope And SoCalGas Status
Tech reviews what detection found (whether ours or another company's pinpoint report) and confirms the failed section, fittings, and any code issues on connected runs. If SoCalGas red-tagged your meter, we get the tag number and the conditions for re-light so the repair is scoped to clear it. We show you the parts coming off the truck (black iron, CSST, gas-rated copper, rated fittings) and explain why those materials. 20 to 40 minutes. You see the scope before we touch anything. Final flat-rate quote gets written including the city's permit fee and any code upgrades the inspector will require on connected sections.
- Step 2
Pull The Permit
Permit application goes in to the city or LA County before the wrench turns. Most SFV jurisdictions issue same-day for residential gas repair. Tech submits scope, materials, and the licensed contractor info. You'll get a copy of the permit on-site. The paperwork stays with your property and protects you on resale (any future buyer's inspector can pull it). 30 to 90 minutes of admin time, usually overlapping with the start of the repair so you're not waiting around.

Execute The Repair
Gas system gets shut and locked at the meter (or stays locked from the SoCalGas tag). Failed section cut out, replaced with the correct rated material, fittings torqued to spec, threaded joints sealed with rated pipe dope (not Teflon tape on a gas line). CSST gets bonded properly to electrical ground. 1 to 4 hours of active wrench time depending on access (open wall is fast, behind a finished wall or in a tight crawlspace is slower). You'll have no gas during the repair. Plan one cold shower and one takeout meal.

Pressure Test To Code
After the repair, tech isolates the system, pressurizes per code (typically 10 to 15 PSI for residential), and holds for the required time window with the inspector watching or with photo documentation. Pressure has to hold dead-flat for the full window or the test fails and we hunt for the source. 30 to 60 minutes for the test itself. You see the gauge reading at start and end. Test result goes on the inspection paperwork.

Inspection And SoCalGas Re-Light
City inspector comes out, reviews the repair and the pressure test, signs the permit. Inspections in SFV cities usually scheduled within 1 to 3 business days of permit issuance. Once the permit is stamped, we coordinate with SoCalGas for the re-light: meter unlock, system re-pressurize, pilot lights re-lit on every appliance, final leak check. We meet SoCalGas at the property so you don't sit on the phone with their dispatch or wait a separate three-day window. Total project from approval to gas-back-on is usually 1 to 5 days depending on permit and SoCalGas availability.
